CurlOn recently notified member Clubs that their Ministry contacts have confirmed that capacity limits are 100% for Sport, meaning if we were to start curling today, we could run full leagues on the ice using all 8 sheets. In addition, Step 3 of the Province's 3-Step Reopening Roadmap came into effect today and allows for 50% capacity for other areas of the club, specifically the lounges. So, after-game socializing is also a go.

This is definitely encouraging news as it answers, at least for now, one of the 3 most-asked questions, specifically “What will be the gathering limits?”

Which brings us to the other two (2) most-asked questions for which we still do not have answers.

Question number 2 is “Will it be a requirement that one be fully vaccinated in order to join?” The answer to this one was clarified somewhat by yesterday’s announcement by Premier Ford rejecting vaccine passports and forced vaccinations. The Canadian Curling Association has scheduled a webinar later this month where clubs will receive additional legal advice on this issue. So, more to come on this one.

Question number 3 is “Will I have to wear a mask while curling?” This one is also unanswerable at this moment. Last season, we were required to wear masks at all times during the game as we were told that “masks prevented transmission”. This is still the contention of the Government’s health “experts”. Vaccination does not change this, as it does not prevent transmission. Some clubs adopted a less strict masking protocol on the ice last season, allowing players to lower their masks when delivering and when sweeping. CurlOn has been working on Return to Play guidelines for the upcoming season and expects to release these shortly. So, more to come on this one as well.

Which brings me to the final question many of you have been asking; “When will on-line registration be available?” Our best guess at this point is sometime mid to late August. By then, we hope to be able to provide more details on what to expect for the upcoming season.

So, stay tuned … much more to come.

    Cheers,
    Doug

We are excited to announce that the 10th Annual Tam Heather Ladies Golf Tournament will be held on Friday September 10th, 2021.

This year the tournament will be acknowledged as The Sandra Bruce Memorial Golf Tournament.

The tournament will again be held at Remington Parkview Golf Course and this year we will be playing the Valley Course.

Check in is between 8:00 and 8:30 AM. We should be in carts and ready to go for the Shotgun Start at 9:00 AM.

The cost per person is $120.00 and includes: Morning Coffee, Greens fees for 18 holes of golf - Scramble Format, Shared Power Cart and Dinner following the tournament.

There will be course contests, prizes for the first, second and third place teams, and draw prizes.

There will also be a special event this year: a LOONIE AUCTION in support of the GOGO’s. Bring a bag of loonies with you!!

The tournament is open to all female members of the Tam Heather Curling and Tennis Club, and friends.

As a result of COVID we are asking teams to register as foursomes. By doing so your team members will be aware of the vaccination status of each person on the team. We don’t feel comfortable putting teams together for this reason. Please note that carts are shared and do not have a divider.

We would also request that one person in the foursome be responsible for registering all four members of the team and for e-transferring payment for all four members of the team.

If you are a single, double or three-person team you can submit your name to Donna Terry at the email address below and she will put you in contact with other people looking to make up a foursome.

Registration is now open and participation is limited to the first 17 foursomes who register.

The point of contact for registration and e-transfer of payment is Donna Terry. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

This email is being circulated to several different lists and we apologize in advance as you may receive this information more than once.

Looking forward to a wonderful and fun day!

Election Process for the Board of Directors

At this year’s Annual General Meeting in September, there will be three vacancies on the Board of Directors. So that every member of the club has an opportunity for input or candidacy, here is a summary of the election process, according to the bylaws of our constitution.

There are 2 ways to become a candidate:

    1. The Nominating Committee, comprised of the President, Vice-President, and 1 representative from each of curling and tennis, will nominate individuals, who must agree to stand for election (a Director whose term has expired may stand again).
    2. Any four (4) members may nominate one or more individuals for election as Directors. These must be in writing, signed by the nominees, and submitted to the Secretary of the Board, c/o the office at Tam Heather Curling & Tennis Club.

ALL NOMINATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE SECRETARY
    BY August 15, 2021, AT 12 NOON.

The Secretary will post the on-time nominations, both by the Nominating Committee and by the members, on the website at least 15 days prior to the AGM. If each Board vacancy has at least one candidate, then there will be no nominations from the floor at the AGM.

For the term of September 2021 to September 2024, nominations will be accepted for the following positions on the Board of Directors:

    • Secretary
    • Treasurer
    • Membership

Current Directors holding the following positions have agreed to stand for re-election:

    • Treasurer
    • Membership

    Annual General Meeting: Monday, September 27, 2021 @ 7:00 P.M.

All the levels of government were represented this morning at a virtual meeting to announce "... joint funding to support the rehabilitation of the Tam Heather Curling and Tennis Club in Toronto."

"The Government of Canada is investing over $1 million in this project through the Community, Culture and Recreation Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada plan. The Government of Ontario is providing more than $900,000, while the City of Toronto is contributing more than $700,000 toward this project.

Tam members continue to be amongst the biggest supporters of CurlON's 50-50 lottery, spending $1,170 on tickets in May, 2nd highest of all the Clubs in Ontario. But, turns out that the winner of the $13,610 jackpot in the May 15 CurlON 50-50 lottery was from the St. Catherines Curling Club. Here is a link to the results from the CurlOn website http://www.curl-on.ca/5050-winners/

The 4th CurlON lottery of the 2020-2021 season is now underway. This next jackpot will be awarded on June 15 with prizes of $500 each week leading up to the final draw. So, don't miss out on your chance at this jackpot. And buy your tickets early in order that you not miss out on the weekly $500 prizes, all while continuing to support youth curling. We haven't won any of the prizes yet, so we're way overdue. Remember, by not buying any tickets, you are increasing the odds that someone else will win instead of you. You don't want that to happen, do you?

I was sure the Grand Prize was going to be won by a Tam member last month!!! But, turns out that the winner of the $27,220 jackpot in the second CurlON 50-50 lottery was from the Barrie Curling Club. Here is a link to the results from the CurlOn website http://www.curl-on.ca/5050-winners/

Tam members did spend a total of $2,570 on losing tickets (the 3rd highest of all the Clubs in Ontario), meaning $1,028 was raised for Tam youth programming.

The 3rd CurlON lottery of the 2020-2021 season is now underway. 3rd CurlON lottery, 3rd most tickets sold last lottery; sounds like a good luck omen to me. This next jackpot will be awarded on May 15 with prizes of $500 each week leading up to the final draw. So, don't miss out on your chance at this jackpot. And buy your tickets early in order that you not miss out on the weekly $500 prizes. There's no prize for being last to purchase your tickets, but there may just be a prize for you if you buy early. All while continuing to support youth curling. We didn't win the last one, so we're sure to do better this time.

Please take a moment to read the email below from the Ontario Tennis Association and consider signing the petition(s) provided in support of reopening outdoor activities (tennis, golf, camping, etc.) There is an abundance of evidence that a strong immune system is the best defence against COVID, or any other sickness for that matter. Exercise is a critical contibutor to a healthy immune system. So, where better to get that exercise than outside.

    Cheers,
    Doug

P.S. And once the outdoor facilities are reopened, hopefully the indoor ones won't be too far behind.

    April 19, 2021

    Hello OTA Member Club Executives;

Followup/Reminder from note sent April 18

In light of the announcement from the Province of Ontario on Friday, April 16 in which the government decided to force the closure of tennis facilities across the province, the OTA issuesd the following statement to the Province of Ontario.

While the Ontario Tennis Association supports the Province of Ontario in it’s fight to control the spread of the Covid-19 virus, we respectfully ask that it reconsiders its decision with regard to the closing of the province’s tennis facilities. In light of overwhelming evidence from the medical community that pursuing outdoor activities while practicing safe physical distancing is safer than remaining indoors when it comes to the spread of the virus; and given that the province’s tennis clubs and academies have excelled in enforcing Covid-19 protocol in the past 12 months, the Association feels that the Province of Ontario should reverse its decision to force the closure of the province’s tennis facilities ASAP.

To that end, one of our member club Presidents, Mr. David Harris from Club de tennis Orléans Tennis Club, has started an on-line petition also requesting that the Province reverses its decision with respect to tennis facilities. The OTA endorses the petition and would like to ask you to consider e-signing the on-line petition here and also send the link to your club's players for their consideration. Thanks to those clubs and facilities that have already done so.

I would like to thank Mr. Harris on behalf of the OTA, for his efforts in spearheading this important initiative.

In addition, the OTA has been made aware of two additional petitions with similar sports and health messaging that you might also want to sign and forward to your membership, here and here.

The OTA feels that the most effective way to encourage the Province to reverse its decision is to show a united voice from the province’s tennis community.

Thank you in advance for your support with this matter.

    Sincerely,

    James Boyce

    Club Information

Tam Heather, or the “Tam” as we call it, is an active friendly club located in the Morningside and 401 community of Scarborough. Tam Heather opened in 1973 as a curling club with eight sheets of ice, then two years later in 1975, the club expanded by adding five tennis courts, three of which were covered in the winter with a bubble. Thirty four years later, in 2009, a four court year-round covered structure was built.
