The Strathcona Cup committee would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all of you who bought tickets for the Strathcona Cup 50/50 + raffle. We were grateful and humbled with the overwhelming support for this event. We were told by the Scots that Tam Heather was the friendliest club the Scots had visited so far; they were very impressed with their visit to Tam Heather. Way to go Tam Fam!!

We were also surprised and pleased to have Toronto curling legend, Joe Gurowka, come out for the games. Gurowka was first known for his participation at the 1966 Brier when he missed an opportunity in an extra playoff to upset Ron Northcott of Calgary. Gurowka skipped one more Ontario appearance at the Brier in 1976. Gurowka also won the Canadian Seniors Championships in 1989 and 1992, playing second for Jim Sharples. Gurowka was also a Canadian Masters champion in 2000. To have Gurowka attend this event at Tam was a true honour.

Overall, the success of this event reflects all of the hard work by the committee, volunteers, staff and Tam club members, plus the commitment we have to the world of curling and community.

In addition, we are very pleased to announce the winners of the 50/50 + Raffle:

50/50 Cash Draw Winner: Paul Terry - Total of $1575.00
Goldline FibreLight Curling Broom: Mary Worrall
Goldline FibreLight Curling Broom: Melanie Goldhar

Both Mike Harris and Richard Hart have other curling commitments that have come up on the day of the event and will no longer be able to play, however, their team will be playing with spares from Tam's Men's section.

Join us to cheer our Team TAM Canada as they challenge four teams from Scotland. The Strathcona Cup is the oldest curling bonspiel in the world (see Strathcona Cup Press Release). These games are free to watch as part of Tam Heather’s 50th Anniversary events open to members and guests. Please join us to witness the 150-year-old traditional ceremonies: the Broom Arch Welcome, the Parade of Players - Pipe to the ICE and Toast to the Piper, the Welcome address, and the “Stacking of the Brooms” break, and of course four great curling matches. Our Team TAM Canada teams are skipped by our very own Richard Hart, Tony Baker, Steve Hawkshaw, and Mike Atkin.

At our Tam Heather Board of Director’s meeting last night, the Tam Heather Board regretfully accepted the resignation of Dennis Welbanks as President. Dennis is stepping down due to personal reasons.

We would like to thank Dennis for all of his contributions to Tam Heather over the years including serving on the Board of Directors for the past 17 years as President. Dennis was also Chairman and Drawmaster of the Mixed Curling Committee for several years.

On an interim basis Dennis served as Club Manager for the 2014-15 season following the passing of Ross Oldham, and was instrumental in the hiring of Doug Miller and Jason Leneeuw as General Managers.

More recently in 2020-21, Dennis helped steer the Club and its policies through the pandemic. His contribution and wise council will be missed.

At our January 11, 2023 Board meeting, the current Vice-President David Muir was nominated for the position of President and he accepted that nomination. The BOD, as empowered by the same Sec 5.19(b), then unanimously voted for David Muir to assume the responsibilities as President of the Tam Board of Directors until the next Annual General Meeting, tentatively scheduled for September 25, 2023.

With the now vacant Vice President position, the BOD decided to call for open nominations for this position from our Tam Heather membership.

Any persons seeking this position must be voted for and approved by the current BOD and in accordance with Sec 5.19(b) of the Constitution/By-Laws, the term of this Vice President position will expire at the next AGM.

Joining the Board now, may be the perfect opportunity to see what it is like, as we will soon be recruiting new members for the Board with terms of service starting September 2023.

    Club Information

Tam Heather, or the “Tam” as we call it, is an active friendly club located in the Morningside and 401 community of Scarborough. Tam Heather opened in 1973 as a curling club with eight sheets of ice, then two years later in 1975, the club expanded by adding five tennis courts, three of which were covered in the winter with a bubble. Thirty four years later, in 2009, a four court year-round covered structure was built.
