Tennis Developmental Stages

Red Ball – Step 1

The Red Ball is the perfect introduction to tennis for young beginners ages 5 – 7 years old. It is the largest, lightest, and slowest ball, making it much easier to hit and control. This allows children to focus on learning the fundamentals, developing proper technique, and building confidence through early success.

Players use smaller racquets and play on a reduced-size court, creating a fun and engaging environment where they can rally, serve, and enjoy the game from their very first lesson.

Orange Ball – Step 2

The Orange Ball program is designed for children approximately 8–10 years old. Players compete on a court that is about 75% the size of a full tennis court while using modified racquets and orange balls that travel slower and bounce lower than regular yellow balls.

This stage builds upon the rallying, serving, and movement skills learned in the Red Ball program. As players improve, they develop greater consistency, better court positioning, and increased confidence while preparing for the transition to a full-size court.

Green Dot Ball – Step 3

Green Dot tennis balls are specifically designed with a lower bounce and slower speed than regular yellow balls. Often called transition balls, they are ideal for players around 9–10 years old who are preparing to play on a full-size court.

Benefits for Young Players

One of the biggest advantages of Green Dot balls is the extra control they provide. Their slower speed and lower bounce give players more time to react, helping them develop confidence while learning to hit with greater accuracy and consistency.

Green Dot balls also allow players to refine their technique by focusing on proper strokes, footwork, and court movement. This strong technical foundation prepares them for the faster pace of regular yellow balls.

Finally, the manageable pace encourages longer rallies and more competitive play, making tennis more enjoyable and helping young athletes develop a lasting passion for the sport.

Tam Heather opened in 1973 as a curling club with eight sheets of ice, then two years later in 1975, the club expanded by adding five tennis courts, three of which were covered in the winter with a bubble. Thirty four years later, in 2009, a four court year-round covered structure was built.
