Another Curling Season Wraps Up

As the season winds down, it’s time to pack away our curling gear and start thinking about summer fun.

Before you tuck everything away, here are a few easy tips to help you get ready for the 2026/27 season:

  • Shoes: Give your slider a quick clean with a lint-free cloth. If you spot any scratches or chips, it might be worth replacing or even upgrading for a smoother, faster glide. Check your gripper shoe too. If it’s worn, torn or thinning consider replacing. Many suppliers can even refresh your toe coating over the summer.
  • Slip-on gripper: Take it off and check it inside and out. If it’s wearing down or shedding material, it may be time for a new one. If it’s still in good shape, a quick wash inside and out will ensure it's ready for the fall.
  • Broom head: Swapping in a new broom head now means one less thing to worry about when the season starts again.

If any of your gear is looking a little tired, summer is a great time to replace it. There are often many end-of-season deals out there. And if you’re updating your curling wardrobe, try to choose clothing that won’t shed fibers onto the ice.

Enjoy your summer! Registration for another fun-filled season opens in mid-July, so keep an eye on Tam emails for details.

We’ll see you back on the ice at Tam in October!

season is over

Tennis Tryout Evaluation Criteria

During the tryouts, each player will be evaluated in the following areas. The goal of the evaluation is to assess overall ability, match play awareness, and on-court performance.

Each tryout participant will receive their score results in each category, and the overall ranking will be used to select the players for each league or team.

1. Physical Skills (Score: 1–10)

Players will be evaluated on their athletic ability and movement on the court, including:

  • Speed and court movement
  • Agility and balance
  • Endurance and overall fitness
  • Ability to recover between points
  • Explosiveness and reaction time

2. Tactical Skills (Score: 1–10)

Players will be assessed on their understanding of the game and ability to make smart decisions during points.

  • Shot selection and decision-making
  • Point construction and strategy
  • Court positioning
  • Ability to adapt to different opponents
  • Awareness of score and match situations

3. Technical Skills (Score: 1–10)

Players will be evaluated on the quality and consistency of their tennis strokes and overall technique.

  • Forehand and backhand consistency
  • Serve technique and effectiveness
  • Return of serve
  • Volley and net play
  • Overheads and specialty shots
  • Overall stroke mechanics and control

4. Match Play Score (Game Score × 2.5)

Players will also receive a score based on their performance during match play.

Format:

  • Players will be divided into groups of four. Groups will be randomly selected by lottery at the court.
  • Each player will serve one full game using no-ad scoring (at 40–40, the next point wins the game).
  • The receiving team chooses the receiving side at 40–40, except in mixed groups, men serve to men and women serve to women.

Rotation:

  • Each player will play a total of four games with one partner and then rotate.
  • By the end of the rotation, each player will have partnered with all three players in their group.

Scoring:

  • A maximum of 12 game points is available.
  • The total game score will then be multiplied by 2.5 and added to the scores from the other 3 categories

Note: New for the 2026–27 Season: A Closed League Try-Out Fee of $12.50 + tax will apply per try-out.

Tam Heather Curling & Tennis Club – Head Injury Protocol

Purpose:
The safety and well-being of all Tam Heather members and guests is our top priority. This guideline provides clear steps to follow in the event of a head injury while participating in Curling or Tennis activities.

Procedure:

  1. Immediate Response:
    • If a member or guest hits their head during play, Tam Heather staff will call paramedics immediately, regardless of whether a helmet was worn.
    • Staff will provide any necessary first aid and ensure the injured individual is safe and monitored until paramedics arrive.
  2. Assessment:
    • Paramedics will assess the individual on-site. This is the safest course of action, as head injuries can result in concussions or brain bleeds, which may not be immediately apparent.
  3. Hospital Transport:
    • It is the responsibility of each individual member or guest to decide if they wish to be taken to the hospital for further testing.
    • Staff will fully support the member’s decision and facilitate safe transport if requested.

Goal:
Our primary goal is to ensure the health and safety of all members and guests by taking every head injury seriously and providing prompt medical attention.

Note:

  • Even minor-seeming impacts should be treated with caution.
  • Members are encouraged to communicate any symptoms of dizziness, headache, nausea, or confusion to staff immediately.
  • If a member falls and hits their head, the Club will determine whether the member may return to the ice/court after paramedics have assessed the individual and provided clearance to resume play.

Tam Heather Parking Lot Enforcement

Dear Tam Heather Members,

This is a friendly reminder to please ensure that your Tam Heather parking pass is clearly visible on your front windshield when parking at the Club.

The Pan Am Centre is hosting a large four-day event from March 5–8, and as a result the Club will be contacting parking enforcement to monitor the lot during this time.

If you are bringing guests, guest parking passes are available and can be picked up from the Club office or the bar.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation in helping us manage parking during this busy period.

Little Rock Update

We are excited to share a wonderful update from our Little Rocks program!

At the end of January, one of our young curlers had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Hit, Draw, Tap Challenge at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts! It was an unforgettable experience, made even more special when she won a signed jersey from Scott Howard. What an amazing memory and achievement!

At the beginning of February, 4 of our boys traveled to Oakville to compete in a U12 bonspiel. We are so proud of our Tam Heather boys! They came out strong, finishing tied for 1st after their opening game. Their second game was a real nail-biter — they fought hard and ultimately placed 3rd overall in the U12 division, losing by just one point. It was incredibly exciting to watch and a fantastic display of teamwork.

We also want to remind everyone that our own Little Rock Bonspiel is coming up on Saturday, March 7. We look forward to hosting another great day of curling and supporting the development of our young athletes.  The focus of our event is always on FUN!  We are currently full with a waiting list!  We are so excited to throw an unforgettable event for our future stars.

A huge thank you to those who have donated to our Little Rocks program.  Your support is truly appreciated.  Donations to support the Little Rocks program can be made any time via e-transfer to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Thank you for your continued support of our youth curling program!

Eric Downer FUN Stick Spiel Recap - Monday, February 23rd

Hello Tam Fam Curlers,

The Eric Downer FUN Stick Bonspiel happened on February, 23, “2026”
And 69 Venerables came to Tam carrying their handy curling STICKS
After the rules and some welcoming sponsor gifts were given OUT
It was time to follow our Pied Piper Eric White to the ice with a toast, a clap and a SHOUT

There were many interesting shots some made and some missed on the ICE
And some had to try their shots not once but  TWICE
After the ending of our initial game ONE
Some Venerables were saying they did just okay but said they were still having a lot of FUN

After some drinks, laughter, chatting, more prizes and LUNCH
We welcomed our sponsors and the Eric Downer family BUNCH
Eric’s daughter delivered a wonderful historical speech about her DAD
And everyone clapped and showed they all were very GLAD

During lunch there were many more prizes that everyone thought were very NICE
Then out for game two we all went out on the ICE
After game three dessert we did EAT
Another fine offering yes a Damiano TREAT

After more prizes the results came in from the computer named CURLY
The results came in quickly yes very EARLY
The top one game winner yes Team Downs with Scott Duncan, Lorne Schiele, and Kevin Jackson got a special Trophy that was found in a HEAP
But the winning team certainly wanted the trophy to KEEP

Then came the Championship Team Stamler with Ian Logan, Bob Williams and Lorne ATKINSON
Who were very happy to hear they had WON
So off everyone went with their prizes and coupons in HAND
For these prizes they were all happy to LAND

The consensus was that everyone with their newfound stick skills they had FUN
So when all was finally said and DONE
Everyone would be back next year to try their stick skills once MORE
And see what the Bonspiel committee would on March 22, 2027 have in STORE

So until then you have lots of time with your STICKS
And bring all those new shots and even some TRICKS
Thanks to all who supported our Downer FUN Stick BONSPIEL
To once again show that playing with a Stick is in fact the real DEAL !!!!

Club Information

Tam Heather, or the “Tam” as we call it, is an active friendly club located in the Morningside and 401 community of Scarborough. Tam Heather opened in 1973 as a curling club with eight sheets of ice, then two years later in 1975, the club expanded by adding five tennis courts, three of which were covered in the winter with a bubble. Thirty four years later, in 2009, a four court year-round covered structure was built.
