Parkland & Recreation Facilities Strategies: Community Engagement

Parkland & Recreation Facilities Strategies: Community Engagement

Toronto's Ice Facility Strategy

We need just a few more moments of your time

Background: Prior to 2019 Toronto Parks set a Master Plan covering plans for Toronto's Recreational Facilities to be completed between 2019-2038 and set a budget for same. The plan stated that at that time major investment in curling was not a priority. Since then, Bayview, Scarborough, St George's and Weston have closed. The plan shortlists 7 of their 51 indoor arenas that were underutilized to be evaluated for conversion to other uses. Six of these 7 arenas are in the west end and the plan calls for the staff to explore opportunites to repurpose to other uses.

We think Curling is an excellent choice

We have communicated these thoughts to the city over the past five years. We have proven that conversion to curling is a viable and profitable solution. No longer will these arenas remain closed during the day. No longer will hundreds of thousands of our tax dollars go to waste. We all know the added health and social benefits of curling.

For the past several years of our involvement we have pushed for changes in this plan to accommodate Curling. Now they want to hear from us. Here's how you can help. Toronto has set out another survey. The Ice Facilities Strategy Survey (deadline to complete is Jan 5th 2025) click here: Ice Facilities Strategy

There is also a community virtual meeting set for Dec 11 (Wednesday) from 6-8 pm that you can voice your concerns. Sign up by going to Ice Facilities Strategy, and register to attend the virtual public meeting on December 11th at 6pm. Your participation will be confirmed by email giving you further instructions.

Going Foward - The city plans to finalize the Ice Facilities Strategy and integrate into the 5 year plan by the summer of 2025. In the Fall of 2025 Parks & Rec will present their plan to City Council for approval.

If we don't let them know how important it is to add curling to their plan change will not happen. Hopefully we can make a difference and not have to wait until after 2038 to enjoy a city-owned curling facility in the west end.

Thanks to all the curlers who have supported us over these past years and we wish each and every one of you Good Health, and Good Curling in the coming year.

Hope to see you at the Virtual meeting on Wednesday.

Remember folks - it takes a Village.

Club Information

Tam Heather, or the “Tam” as we call it, is an active friendly club located in the Morningside and 401 community of Scarborough. Tam Heather opened in 1973 as a curling club with eight sheets of ice, then two years later in 1975, the club expanded by adding five tennis courts, three of which were covered in the winter with a bubble. Thirty four years later, in 2009, a four court year-round covered structure was built.
