Congratulations to Team Cheung repeating as Toronto Curling Association (TCA) Youth Interclub Bonspiel Champions!
Tam’s Team Turcotte won the tournament last year. Organized by TCA Youth Director Julie Hastings, an Interclub of 16 teams from the GTA competed in three bonspiels held at Tam Heather (Dec 9), Oshawa (Feb 3) and Dixie (Mar 23).
Team Cheung (L-R): Charles Bates (Spare/Lead), Victor Zhong (Lead/Second), Jonathan Cheung (Skip), Owen Freel (Vice); Absent: Jason Sone (Second) (Photos taken by Patrick Cheung)
(Fun Fact: Sarah Wilkes, on Rachel Homan’s team, is also on the TCA Interclub trophy! She skipped a Tam team in 2005 at the age of 15!)
Playing on sheet 4, it was a close final game against Team McClelland from Oshawa with both teams trading single points in the first five ends. In the 6th end, Team McClelland took a deuce, almost scored three but their skip hit a guard with her last rock draw attempt. So, it was up to Team Cheung to either tie the game and force a draw to the button to determine a winner or score two in the last end for the win. After an unfortunate flash on a hit by Oshawa on Tam’s shot rock in the 7th end, the Tam team drew the back of the button for two points, winning the championship in dramatic fashion! Great game boys!!
Honourable mention goes to Tam’s Team Harris (Skip Laura Harris, Vice/Spare Zoe Kirner/Mackenzie Harris, Second Ellen Bryan, Lead/Spare Abigale Kitcher/Liam McMichael-Schuh) for finishing third event bonspiel consolation winners! Well done everyone!!
