Tennis Tryout Evaluation Criteria
During the tryouts, each player will be evaluated in the following areas. The goal of the evaluation is to assess overall ability, match play awareness, and on-court performance.
Each tryout participant will receive their score results in each category, and the overall ranking will be used to select the players for each league or team.
1. Physical Skills (Score: 1–10)
Players will be evaluated on their athletic ability and movement on the court, including:
- Speed and court movement
- Agility and balance
- Endurance and overall fitness
- Ability to recover between points
- Explosiveness and reaction time
2. Tactical Skills (Score: 1–10)
Players will be assessed on their understanding of the game and ability to make smart decisions during points.
- Shot selection and decision-making
- Point construction and strategy
- Court positioning
- Ability to adapt to different opponents
- Awareness of score and match situations
3. Technical Skills (Score: 1–10)
Players will be evaluated on the quality and consistency of their tennis strokes and overall technique.
- Forehand and backhand consistency
- Serve technique and effectiveness
- Return of serve
- Volley and net play
- Overheads and specialty shots
- Overall stroke mechanics and control
4. Match Play Score (Game Score × 2.5)
Players will also receive a score based on their performance during match play.
Format:
- Players will be divided into groups of four. Groups will be randomly selected by lottery at the court.
- Each player will serve one full game using no-ad scoring (at 40–40, the next point wins the game).
- The receiving team chooses the receiving side at 40–40, except in mixed groups, men serve to men and women serve to women.
Rotation:
- Each player will play a total of four games with one partner and then rotate.
- By the end of the rotation, each player will have partnered with all three players in their group.
Scoring:
- A maximum of 12 game points is available.
- The total game score will then be multiplied by 2.5 and added to the scores from the other 3 categories
Note: New for the 2026–27 Season: A Closed League Try-Out Fee of $12.50 + tax will apply per try-out.
