Tam Heather Curling & Tennis Club – Head Injury Protocol

Purpose:
The safety and well-being of all Tam Heather members and guests is our top priority. This guideline provides clear steps to follow in the event of a head injury while participating in Curling or Tennis activities.

Procedure:

  1. Immediate Response:
    • If a member or guest hits their head during play, Tam Heather staff will call paramedics immediately, regardless of whether a helmet was worn.
    • Staff will provide any necessary first aid and ensure the injured individual is safe and monitored until paramedics arrive.
  2. Assessment:
    • Paramedics will assess the individual on-site. This is the safest course of action, as head injuries can result in concussions or brain bleeds, which may not be immediately apparent.
  3. Hospital Transport:
    • It is the responsibility of each individual member or guest to decide if they wish to be taken to the hospital for further testing.
    • Staff will fully support the member’s decision and facilitate safe transport if requested.

Goal:
Our primary goal is to ensure the health and safety of all members and guests by taking every head injury seriously and providing prompt medical attention.

Note:

  • Even minor-seeming impacts should be treated with caution.
  • Members are encouraged to communicate any symptoms of dizziness, headache, nausea, or confusion to staff immediately.
  • If a member falls and hits their head, the Club will determine whether the member may return to the ice/court after paramedics have assessed the individual and provided clearance to resume play.

Club Information

Tam Heather, or the “Tam” as we call it, is an active friendly club located in the Morningside and 401 community of Scarborough. Tam Heather opened in 1973 as a curling club with eight sheets of ice, then two years later in 1975, the club expanded by adding five tennis courts, three of which were covered in the winter with a bubble. Thirty four years later, in 2009, a four court year-round covered structure was built.
