It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Sharon Thompson on June 19th 2023.

Sharon is survived by Allan, her loving husband of over 52 years, daughter Caroline (Gihad), son David (Bridgette), her mother Jessie Pettifer, and her 5 very dear grandchildren Eli, Simon, Chloe, Phoebe, and Jake. Special mention to her brother Graham (Valerie), their daughters Kate (Jonathan) and Sandra, and the entire Thompson clan, and the Enns cousins.

Sharon was born on July 7, 1947 in St Catharines and later lived her life in Ottawa, Hamilton, and Toronto.

After completing her Honours Bachelor of Arts and Teacher’s Certificate at McMaster University, she taught English in Scarborough high schools until her retirement from Woburn Collegiate Institute. She was a beloved teacher to her students, especially the friends of Caroline and David who were also students at Woburn, and the teachers at Woburn became her lifelong friends.

Sharon and Allan travelled the world including many trips to Europe, China, South East Asia, Turkey, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean, and most of Canada.

She loved her home in Scarborough where she hosted many gatherings for family and friends, either around the pool or around the dining table. She loved her art group, reading books, attending Blue Jays games (since 1977), and baking with her grandchildren.

We would like to thank the doctors and nurses of Scarborough Health Network and Princess Margaret Hospital for their hard work, kindness, and compassion. Sharon had many wonderful years of health after her initial diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in 2017.

In lieu of flowers and gifts, please consider a memorial donation to the Scarborough Health Network Foundation.

As requested by Sharon, a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Last Call for Nominations to the Board of Directors

To date, we have received the names of several individuals interested in joining the Board. To that end, it appears we may be having an election for the two available board positions, namely Tennis Liaison and Vice President. This election would be held at the TAM Annual General Meeting in September.

If anyone is interested in either of these positions, please contact the Nominations Committee through the office before June 30, 2023, at which point Board nominations will close.

Volunteer Positions

Volunteering on any of our committees is an excellent way to meet other like-minded people, gain an understanding of TAM governance, and helps us share the responsibilities amongst more of our members. If you are willing to help, please contact Tony or Jason in the office who will direct you to a standing committee chair or either the Tennis or Curling Liaison Directors.

If you are not interested in either the Tennis Liaison or the Vice President positions, noted above, but would like to help, there are many volunteer positions here at TAM. We are always looking for representatives of the Tennis and Curling Leagues to join the Tennis Committee and Curling Committee respectively, plus there are numerous standing or ad-hoc committees of the board you could join.

Happy Spring Everyone!

Please see the attached flyer for information regarding the annual Tam Ladies Golf Tournament which will be held on Friday September 8th, 2023.

Stay tuned! More information will follow in the summer.

2023 Tam Heather Offer

Tara Cook

Tara Lynne Cook
November 14, 1973 – May 8, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tara Cook on May 8, 2023, surrounded by her family, following a multi-year battle with cancer. Tara will be forever missed by her husband Matthew, children Benjamin (20) and Caroline (17), dog Percy (2), parents Maureen and Brian Beckley, aunt Susan Beckley, sister Lisa Young (Chris, Tai, Taylor), parents-in-law Janet and Philip Cook, sister-in-law Sarah Enright (John, Martin, Simon), cousin Paul Morton (Lori, Andrew, Sarah), and best friend Christina Wilson.

Tara was born (in 1973), raised, and married (in 1997), all in Scarborough (Toronto) Ontario. In 1997 she began working as a high school teacher for the Toronto District School Board. In 2003 she moved with her husband to Markham, Ontario but continued to teach in Scarborough.

Tara will be fondly remembered by her David and Mary Thompson C.I. students and colleagues, where she served as an inspirational teacher and coach for many years; by members of Markham Softball, Ringette, and Baseball organizations, where she served in many roles as a league organizer, coach, and avid fan; and by the members of the Tam Heather Curling & Tennis Club, where she was an active curling member.

Above all, Tara was a devoted mother who loved her children deeply.

Tara’s kindness, warm heart, and positivity allowed her to meaningfully connect with so many people on a level that transcended the role she played in their lives.

In lieu of flowers, in-memoriam contributions to the Tara Cook Scholarship Fund, sponsored by David and Mary Thompson C.I. would be an appreciated tribute. Alternatively, donations to the Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation or to the Canadian Cancer Society would also be appreciated.

We received some terribly sad news yesterday that one of our Tam members lost her battle with cancer on Monday.

Tara Cook 2023

Thanks to all members, present and former, for making the Tam Heather 50th anniversary gala dinner an evening to remember. Those who attended had an opportunity to look over past history, reconnect with former members, and enjoy a wondereful meal with friends.

The many members who supported the 50th fundraisers were also an important part of the success of this celebration.

Once again our Tam Heather family joined together to make a special occasion truly memorable.

Thank you on behalf of the steering committee: Barb Fernandez, Dave Muir, Brenda Wilkes, Diana Ranken

Club Information

Tam Heather, or the “Tam” as we call it, is an active friendly club located in the Morningside and 401 community of Scarborough. Tam Heather opened in 1973 as a curling club with eight sheets of ice, then two years later in 1975, the club expanded by adding five tennis courts, three of which were covered in the winter with a bubble. Thirty four years later, in 2009, a four court year-round covered structure was built.
